NA LOSA FALAYA

SOUTHEAST UNITED STATES

Seen at first from a distance, the Na Losa Falaya is easily mistaken for a fellow traveler. It is only when a friendly wave is responded to in an eerie, almost mirrored motion, that the realization dawns that this thing, this “Long Black Being,” is not human.

Making its home deep in the forest, most likely near the standing waters and stagnant decay of a swamp, the Na Losa Falaya stalks the footpaths and trails that are thought to provide safety for those traveling through the loneliest parts of the wilderness. The Na Losa Falaya watches its prey from a distance, unseen and quietly, so the unsuspecting traveler may not even realize it’s there. When Na Losa Falaya first appears, it’s as a dark form moving among the dense obscurities of dusk, dashing across the path ahead, dancing in and out of the shadows, melting into the darkness in one place and rising out of it in another. Sometimes it cries out from afar, mimics other people’s voices, weeps, or calls for help.

It’s only when the Na Losa Falaya makes its presence known that its true appearance is revealed: a long-shriveled face, narrow, squinting eyes – as black as the skin surrounding them, and discernable only by their glossiness – long pointed ears and long dark hair, damp and clinging. Those unfortunate enough to look upon the Long Black Being are so unsettled that they immediately lose consciousness.

This is the moment when the Na Losa Falaya strikes, not with rage or ferocity, but with a simple prick of a locust thorn. When they awaken, the victim has no idea what has occurred, and is totally unaware of the spell that has been placed on them. In time, a subtle irritability will set in. The victim’s new, surly disposition will steadily intensify, until loud outbursts and mean words become anger and physical rage. An insidious fury eventually arises, compelling the victim to murder those closest to them.

Some say that you will recognize the Na Losa Falaya because it hovers slightly above the ground. Others have seen Long Black Beings slither along the edges of paths and trails like snakes – just waiting for a traveler to make even the slightest of wrong steps. Either way, when you walk in the wilderness, keep your wits about you.
